Who I am
I'm 29, based in Brighton, and I have spent the last four years travelling almost entirely in someone else's company – usually someone I met specifically because we both wanted to go somewhere. City breaks, long-haul, three-day detours attached to a conference in Geneva. I am a travel companion, and I say that out loud rather than dressing it up as something else.
On Your Travel Companion I write about what I have actually done: the resort in Crete that was worth every penny, the Business Class upgrade that absolutely was not, the awkward conversation about money at Gatwick that taught me to have it three weeks earlier next time. And the questions that come up for anyone considering this: how do I say what I want? How do I stay safe? What does a fair arrangement even look like?
How it started
I was working in hotel events in London, watching other people fly somewhere interesting every week. A friend mentioned she was flying to Marrakesh with someone she had met on a dating site who was covering the trip. My first reaction was scepticism. My second was curiosity, because she came back genuinely happy and entirely unbothered by what anyone thought.
My first proper trip as a companion was four days in Porto with a man in his fifties who had been widowed two years earlier and simply did not want to eat dinner alone. We agreed everything before we flew: separate rooms, he covered the trip, no assumptions on either side. It was one of the easiest holidays I have ever had, and it changed how I think about travelling with people.
